How I defeated constipation and abdominal swelling with a fruit that I was eating incorrectly.
I am 51 years old and have always suffered from constipation and the resulting sensation of incomplete evacuation, a disorder that has devastatingly affected my lifestyle.
That sensation of abdominal heaviness associated with meteorism (swollen belly), has bothered me as much as it has stimulated me to continuously document myself in various medical books and on the internet, to search for causes and possible solutions.
My questions about the alleged causes:
Poor diet
Intestinal dysbiosis
Intolerance to one or more foods
Irritable bowel syndrome
Lazy bowel syndrome
Dolichocolon (anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by the presence of a colon that is longer than normal)
The solutions I have tried over the years:
– Follow a correct diet (I have not found any particular difficulties, I am an athlete and have always taken care of my diet)
– Cycles of probiotics and lactic ferments (it did not help at all)
– Food intolerance tests (I just threw away my money)
– Perform the barium enema test, where an irregular section of intestine with an abnormal curvature was highlighted.
– Follow the guidelines of the fodmap diet
– Herbal teas of all kinds and types
I also tried the most varied foods (linseed, psyllium, sesame and chia seeds, lactose-free yogurts of all types… and I’ll stop here because the list is very long), with the opposite result to the one desired, because my abdomen swelled even more.
The only benefits I obtained were:
– Following the guidelines of the foodmap diet that is easily found online and that identifies the potentially responsible foods (lactose, sorbitol, carbonated drinks, fruit and vegetables rich in fermentable sugars)
– Regularly taking one or two kiwis in the morning (on an empty stomach one hour before breakfast)
– Trying occasionally and with mixed results to empty the intestine with drugs and laxatives.
Despite considerable progress, my problem was not solved because I alternated days of well-being with other and more frequent days of constipation and in the best case of incomplete evacuation… a discomfort that caused me muscle weakness, nervousness, feeling cold, pain from abdominal cramps, physical blemish due to a belly swollen like a balloon.
The solution when you least expect it.

I ate it every morning for breakfast, along with some biscuits and a coffee.
It is a low fodmap fruit, so it does not bloat the belly, it is very rich in nutrients and is a natural laxative.
One morning I decided to eat it differently than usual… I peel it, open it in two, remove the white internal part (columella), put it in the blender, add a glass of water, wait 5 minutes, then drink it all.
After half an hour I start to feel the first symptoms, my intestines move like never before… a real surprise.
After an hour I had already done my duty and conquered constipation.
Evidently the blender and the added water create a puree that facilitates the work and the permanence in the stomach and directs it to the rested intestine, free from the long fast of the night.
Strictly at breakfast for the aforementioned reason.
A real bomb!!!
